Working Together
At South Hams and West Devon councils, we have been characterised by our energy and creativity, promoted by our political commitment to drive change. We are two sovereign councils, but we work closely together to deliver our shared vision to provide the very best services to the people of South West Devon. Whilst we share staff and a management team, we are two separate councils with different governance systems, different councillors, different policies, and separate budgets, and we each have different challenges.
The decision to work together began with a shared Chief Executive in 2007, which was consolidated by the move to a shared management team, with shared services in place by 2012. We have a powerful partnership, and our shared model provides annual savings of over £6m across both councils.
Great progress has been made in forming an agile workforce of business support officers, professional officers and locality officers who deliver services through streamlined processes. In partnership, we deliver cost-effective and customer-focused services, including waste and recycling, planning, housing, environmental health and community services.
From a cultural perspective, we currently hold the MJ’s prestigious “SLT Team of the Year” award and have recently received outstanding peer review reports across each council.
